Ferguson was a three-sport athlete at [[Muskegon Catholic Central High School]] in football, baseball, and [[wrestling]]. He was the starting defensive back for the 2000 Division 8 state football champions and was a three-time All-State selection in wrestling, winning the 152-lb division in 2002.

Ferguson began his professional MMA career fighting in small organizations around California in 2008. Notable matches in his early career include a win over kickboxing champion [[Joe Schilling]] and a loss to future WEC fighter [[Karen Darabedyan]].

Ferguson applied to compete in the UFC's reality series "The Ultimate Fighter" multiple times. In 2010, he was finally accepted to compete in season 13 of the series after amassing a 10-2 professional record and winning the welterweight championship in PureCombat. Anthony Armand Ferguson Padilla[1] (* 12. Februar 1984 in Oxnard, Kalifornien) ist ein US-amerikanischer Mixed Martial Arts-Kämpfer im Leichtgewicht der Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Dort kämpft er seit dem Gewinn der Ultimate Fighter Championship im Jahr 2011. In der UFC ist er mit zwölf gewonnenen Kämpfen in Folge Rekordhalter für die längste Siegesserie in seiner Gewichtsklasse.[2] Im UFC-Leichtgewicht-Ranking rangierte er im Juni 2019 hinter Chabib Nurmagomedow auf zweiter Position und im UFC-Pound for pound-Ranking of Position 12.[3][4][5]

Kindheit und Jugend

Obwohl in Kalifornien geboren wurde, wuchs Ferguson hauptsächlich in Muskegon, Michigan auf. Er ist mexikanischer Abstammung. Sein Nachname stammt jedoch von seinem Schottisch-amerikanischem Stiefvater.[6][7][6]

Ferguson war an der Muskegon Catholic Central High School beim Fußball, Baseball und Wrestling. He was the starting defensive back for the 2000 Division 8 state football champions and was a three-time All-State selection in wrestling, winning the 152-lb division in 2002.

Nach der High School meldete sich Ferguson an der Central Michigan University an, ging jedoch zur Grand Valley State University. Er besuchte außerdem das Muskegon Community College, wo er im Jahr 2006 die College-Interne Meisterschaft im Wrestling in seiner Gewichtsklasse gewann.[8]

Nach dem College zog er zu seinen Verwandten nach Kalifornien und arbeitete im Marketing und Sales, sowie als Barkeeper. Dort kam er in Kontakt mit der MMA-Szene und entschied sich wenig später sich hauptberuflich mit diesem Sport zu beschäftigen.

Ferguson ist verheiratet und hat einen Sohn.

Im März 2019 beantragte seine Frau aus dem Motiv heraus ihrem Mann psychologische Hilfe zukommen zu lassen ein Kontaktverbot, nachdem sie bei ihm Wesensveränderungen und Paranoia festzustellen glaubte. Er, der gleichzeitig unter Insomnie leiden würde, sei ihr gegenüber aber nicht gewaltätig aufgetreten. Der UFC-Manager Dana White gab an, Tony Fergusons persönlichen Probleme hielten ihn davon ab weiter zu MMA zu betreiben. Im April 2019 ließ sie den Antrag fallen. Gleichzeitig wurde bekannt gegeben, dass Tony seinen nächsten Kampf planen würde. [9][10][11]
