He has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Aldershot since June 2017.[1] He is a graduate of the University of London and The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Docherty is a former British Army officer who served in Iraq and Afghanistan.[3]

The Financial Times called his selection "the highest-profile tussle over a candidate choice, the party leadership rejected a request from activists in Aldershot to be allowed to consider Daniel Hannan, the prominent Eurosceptic MEP, for the safe Tory seat".[3]
