Abu Bakar Apong is a Bruneian politician. A member of Legislative Council, he is currently the Minister of Home Affairs since 2015.^[1] Previously, he held many government portfolios including Minister of Education, Minister of Communications and Minister of Health.

Abu Bakar was educated at University of Malaya where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts in 1972. He entered Lancaster University where he graduated with Master of Arts in 1980.^[2]

After completed his undergraduate studies, Abu Bakar worked as an Education Officer. In 1974, he worked as a teacher and later was promoted as Principal of Maktab Melayu Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan. Later on, he was promoted to Head of Planning, Research and Guidance, Education Department in 1975 for five years. In 1980, Abu Bakar was later transferred to the position of Head of Training Unit, Position Office. A year later, he worked as Senior Administrative Officer at General Office of His Majesty Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam until 1984.^[2]

Shortly after Brunei's independence on 1 January 1984, Abu Bakar was designated as Director of Education. One year later, he was assigned to the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor of University of Brunei Darussalam. In the same year, he became Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office, a portfolio he assumed until 1991.^[2]

In 1991, Abu Bakar was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of University of Brunei Darussalam.^[2] By the consent of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, Abu Bakar was made as Permanent Secretary (Professional) at the Ministry of Education in 1999 after serving 8 years as Vice-Chancellor.^[2]

In 2002, Abu Bakar was selected by His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah to become a member of Brunei Cabinet Ministers. His first portfolio as Minister was Minister of Health which he assumed on 17 May 2002.^[2] On 24 May 2005, he succeeded his predecessor, Zakaria Sulaiman, as Minister of Communications. After serving the position for 5 years, Abu Bakar was transferred to as Minister of Education on 29 May 2010 succeeding Abdul Rahman Mohamed Taib.^[2]

On 22 October 2015, after completing his three portfolios as Minister, Abu Bakar was appointed as Minister of Home Affairs. He was reappointed to the same portfolio after a Cabinet reshuffle in January 2018.^[1]
