The Sandbox ist ein erstmals am 15. Mai 2012 erschienenes Videospiel für iOS und Android. Es wurde von Pixowl entwickelt und 2018 von Animoca Brands übernommen.^[1] The Sandbox ist Mitglied der Blockchain Game Alliance.

Im Spiel können Pixel-artige Welten geschaffen werden. 2016 erschien der Nachfolger Sandbox Evolution.^[2] Bis August 2018 wurde The Sandbox laut Pressemitteilung von Animoca über 40 Millionen Mal heruntergeladen und hat über 1 Million aktive User pro Monat.^[3][4][5]

Im Spiel können 3D Welten im Voxel-Stil wie in einen Metaversum nebeneinander bespielt werden.^[6]

Im August 2018 übernahm Animoca das Spiel für 4,875 Millionen US$.^[7] Geplant ist eine Minecraft-ähnliche 3D-Version im Voxel-Stil für Windows, bei dem User im Spiel geschaffene Erzeugnisse (mit der Währung SAND bzw. LAND in Form von Non-Fungible Tokens, "ERC-721") über die Blockchain handeln können.^[8][9][10]

Im September 2018 gewann das Spiel auf der Pocket Gamer Connects Helsinki den "Blockchain Gamer Prize".^[11]

Seit 2019 wird der kostenlose Spieleditor Voxedit zum Download angeboten.^[12] Am 5. Dezember 2019 wurden innerhalb von 4 Stunden alle virtuellen LAND-Einheiten des Vorverkaufs verkauft.^[13] Zwischen 19 Juli und 19. September 2019 investierte Square Enix, B Cryptos, and True Global Ventures 2,01 Millionen US$ in The Sandbox.^[14][15][16] Bis zum Juni 2020 wurden 1 Million US$ an virtuellem Land verkauft.^[17] Über Binance IEO wurden im August 2020 SAND-Kryptowährung im Wert von 3 Millionen USD verkauft.^[18][19] The Sandbox hat u. a. auch eine Kooperation mit deadmau5, Richie Hawtin, Shaun das Schaf, The Walking Dead, Atari, den Glücksbärchis und den Schlümpfen.^{[20][21][22][23][24]} Auch Cameron und Tyler Winklevoss und die Band Avenged Sevenfold gehören zu den Investoren in virtuellem Land in The Sandbox.^[25]
