Die Juno Awards 2020 sollten am 15. März 2020 im SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan vergeben werden. Es war die 49. Veranstaltung der Preisverleihung. Auf Grund der COVID-19-Pandemie in Kanada wurden alle Veranstaltungen in Zusammenhang mit dem Award sowie die eigentliche Preisverleihung abgesagt. Damit war es die erste Veranstaltung seit 1988, die abgesagt werden musste. Stattdessen wurden die Gewinner am 29. Juni über eine Online-Veranstaltung bekanntgegeben.[1]

Bewerbungsverfahren

Saskatoonbewarb sich bereits im Vorjahr um die Awards, konnte aber nicht genug Geld aufbringen.[2] Für 2020 gelang es der Stadt jedoch. Die Regierung von Saskatoon konnte 350.000 Dollar für das Event bereitstellen.[3]

Auswirkungen der Covid-19-Pandemie

Am 12. März 2020, drei Tage vor der Preisverleihung, gab die Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) bekannt, dass die Preisveranstaltung sowie alle anderen Veranstaltungen auf Grund gesundheitlicher Bedenken wegen der Ausbreitung des Coronavirus abgesagt wird, Einen tag vorher hatte die World Health Organization das Infektionsgeschehen als Pandemie eingestuft. Obwohl Saskatchewan zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch keinen bestätigten Corona-Fall hatte, sorgte eine vorher erfolgte Ankündigung, dass die Veranstaltung wie geplant stattfinden könne, für Protest durch besorgte Bürger. CARAS gab an, dass sie an einer alternativen Veranstaltung arbeite.[4][5]

Der Junos Songwriters' Circle, eine jährliche Veranstaltung, die bislang immer am Wochenende der Preisverleihung abgehalten wurde, wurde im Mai 2020 als Webserie gesendet. Bei der Veranstaltung handelt es sich um eine Podiumsdiskussion, bei der verschiedene Songwriter die geschichte zu ihren Songs erzählen. Die erste Episode umfasste Brett Kissel, Dominique Fils-Aimé, Kaia Kater und Devon Portielje. In der zweiten traten Rose Cousins, William Prince, Ed Robertson und Tenille Townes auf, in der dritten Dallas Green, Sarah Harmer, Joel Plaskett und Buffy Sainte-Marie. In der vierten und letzten traten Scott Helman, Meghan Patrick, Tom Wilson und Whitehorse auf.

Onlineveranstaltung

Am 18. Juni wurden die Preise in einer Online-Zeremonie vergeben, die von CBC Gem am 29. Juni 2020 ausgestrahlt wurde.

Alessia Cara sollte die ursprüngliche Veranstaltung leiten. Für den Livestream obernahmen die Moderation Odario Williams und Damhnait Doyle.

Jann Arden sollte ursprünglich während der Verleihung in die Canadian Music Hall of Fame aufgenommen werden.[6]
